William Jennings Bryan
Bryan was hired as the prosecutions attorney (for the state of Tennessee) for The Scopes Trial because he had the background and knowledge of how the laws were. He was a 3 time democratic presidential candidate and the United States Secretary of State under President Wilson.
He fought against, in The Scopes Trial, John Scope's and his attorney Clarence Darrow, who attacked Tennessee's Butler Act as a threat to free expression. This photo was taken in Tennessee (1925) of William Jennings Bryan speaking to the jury about how the theory of evolution contradicted deeply held religious beliefs. Darrow asked Bryan many different questions, but no matter what, Bryan never stepped down and he fought for his beliefs. Darrow asked Bryan, "When exactly was the earth created? How many days did it take? Where did Cain get his wife?" Bryan replied, "I am simply trying to protect the word of God against the greatest atheist or agnostic in the United States!" |
